Earth Award Program

The Earth Award Program is part of the school education program that was started in 1999. Schools that wish to qualify for an Earth Award must meet the following requirements:

  • Collect and recycle white paper and one additional material (plastic, glass, cardboard, steel, aluminum, etc.)

  • Enact a two-sided paper policy for the entire school. All school photocopies should be copied two-sided whenever possible. Personnel should be notified with a memo and signs hung in classrooms and offices.

  • Participate in a county or municipal recycling education program. Will County Educators can be reached at 815-727-8834.

  • Perform one of the fun activities listed below.

    1. Conduct at least two Waste-Free Lunch Days (students bring lunches in reusable containers)

    2. Exhibit recycled art (arts and crafts made from materials that would otherwise be thrown away), or

    3. Hold a Recycled Product Fair. Each student should research and display one product that they find in stores, catalogs, or on the internet. Students should obtain samples and information from manufacturers or distributors.

Upon completing the above criteria, schools will be invited to attend an awards ceremony.

If you are interested in signing up for this program, please contact the Waste Services Division at 815-727-8834.
