New! Francis Field Youth Foundation received $3,000.00 Heritage Fund Grant from Landmarks Illinois to restore sliding barn doors! (February 2009)

Francis Field was designated a landmark due to its association with New Lenox resident, Fred A. Francis and its reflection of Will County’s rural heritage.

Born on October 26, 1888, Fred Francis was the son of Charles and Mary Francis. Charles and Mary Francis owned property in Section 10 of New Lenox. (Charles was the son of Abraham Francis. First arriving in New Lenox from Ohio in 1831, the Abraham Francis Family was one of the Township’s first settlers.)  Fred Francis attended Joliet Township High School and following his graduation, farmed his father’s property. In 1915, Fred Francis married Anne Clow.  They had two children, Fred C. and Charles J. Mr. Francis was also a founding member and president of the New Lenox State Bank (1927). Committed to 4-H activities and working with youth, Mr. Francis assisted in establishing the New Lenox 4-H Club in 1928. He served as the club leader for over twenty-five years.

In addition to being a farmer, Fred Francis was a dedicated civic servant and served New Lenox Township citizens for twenty-eight years (May, 1925 – October, 1953) as Township Supervisor.  Additionally, he served as an administrator for the Township’s School District No. 124 from 1925-1929.  Mr. Francis was also Will County Board Chairman from April 1951 until his sudden death on October 29,1953.

The first horse show took place on the property in 1956. The property is still used for shows and other 4-H activities. Additionally, various organizations utilize the fieldhouse for classes, exhibits, and other events.

Designated a Will County Historic Landmark on September 18, 2008. (Designation applies to the entire property with the exception of the concession stand, restroom, and fireplace.)
