At one time the John B. Salisbury House was once situated on approximately 90 acres. Though the house itself is associated with John B. Salisbury, the property upon which it is situated is connected to Cornelius C. Van Horne. Mr. Horne arrived from New Jersey to New Lenox Township in 1832 and was one of its early settlers. Though he lived there only a short time, Mr. Van Horne served as Will County’s first postmaster (New Lenox and Frankfort Townships), and also an attorney in Joliet. Following Joliet’s incorporation in 1853, Mr. Van Horne served as the city’s first mayor until he died in 1854.

Though relatively little information exists on the house’s original date of construction, given the style of the house and its known history, the house was mostly likely built by John B. Salisbury. Mr. Salisbury was known as a blacksmith and carriage builder.  Similar to Mr. Van Horne, he also served as a postmaster.  Subsequent to Mr. Salisbury’s ownership, the house was owned by local dentist, Dr. Henry Miller who used the parlor as his office.
