Historical records indicate that this pre-Civil War cemetery was established prior to the 1855 establishment of Frankfort Township. According to a local resident, the cemetery originally contained between 30-40 grave sites. The last record taken (1918) indicated that approximately 25 headstones were still standing. Currently, it is difficult to estimate the number of existing headstones due to the overgrown vegetation. The legible headstones have yielded the names of several of Frankfort's earliest settlers such as General Davis and Theresa M. Barker and a few young children. Until recently, the cemetery had been abandoned and forgotten. However, current preservation efforts have resulted in the clearance of excess debris which has yielded additional name renderings of the deceased settlers. This sacred site is significant because it is one of very few resources available with the potential to provide information about the early settlement of Frankfort. The cemetery was designated a Will County Landmark on November 18, 1999.
