The Friedrich Gottlieb Seggebruch Homestead is a privately owned and occupied single family residence located in Crete Township. The original house was constructed c. 1860 and extensively remodeled in 1930. Therefore, the period of significance runs from c. 1860 to 1930 when the last major changes occurred. The Seggebruch House has historical and architectural significance as a good example of a vernacular homestead, which evolved into the American Foursquare type. The house served as the family homestead for five generations of the Seggebruch Family and received recognition in 1972 as a certified Illinois Centennial Farm. The house is the only major unaltered building on the farmstead has good architectural integrity and is in relatively good condition.

The Seggebruch farm served as the family homestead for five generations of the Seggebruch Family beginning in 1853. Friedrich Gottlieb Seggebruch along with his wife, Friederike Elisabeth Eleonore Siegmann (Louisa), her mother and all five of their children emigrated from Port of Bremerhaven, Germany in the Autumn of 1853. The boat trip to New York lasted six weeks, after which the trip continued on water via the Erie Canal and the Great Lakes to Detroit and finally to Chicago. On November 8, 1853, Carl Gottlieb Seggebruch purchased 80 acres of land in Crete Township from an attorney and land broker, Francis Hoffmann, whose office was at 55 Clark Street in Chicago. The land was purchased at a cost of $5.00 per acre, a sum of $400, which was secured with a $100 down payment and a $300 mortgage. After 129 years and five generations of ownership, the Seggebruch family sold the homestead farm in 1982.
