agricultural community. Unfortunately, the advent of twentieth century
inventions and new energy sources would result in the mill's 1917
operational demise.
H .A.
Rathje's construction of the mill contributed to the agricultural
prosperity throughout Will and Kankakee Counties and subsequently, many
communities throughout the Midwest. The establishment of the mill in the
Village of Peotone contributed to the village's expansion and recognition
as a significant milling operational source throughout the Midwest.
Dutch
millwrights designed the agricultural structure, and their design of the
60 ft. tower make it Peotone's sole skyscraper. he rare design of the
structure has allowed the mill to become a familiar visual landmark in the
Village of Peotone and throughout Will County. (Throughout the mill's 129
years of existence, its integrity has not been significantly compromised.
The structure still appears as it did originally. The mill was listed on
the National Register of Historic Places on March 19, 1982. The Historical
Society of Greater Peotone is in the process of seeing that the mill is
restored to working condition.
The H.A.
Rathje Mill was designated a Will County Historic Landmark on January 18,
2002.
