John Lane,
Sr. (1793-1857) and his family emigrated from Monroe County, New York, to
"Yankee Settlement" (Homer Township) in 1833. That same year he
invented the first steel-breaking (or prairie) plow ever used in this
country. An improvement over the wooden plows used at that time, the steel
plow created less friction, pulled easier, and turned the soil completely
upside down. This invention saved farmers the time spent having to stop
and scrape soil from the wooden plows. John Lane's blacksmith shop and
farmstead were located at what is now the northeast corner of 163rd Street
and Gougar Road. The John Lane Monument stands on this site to honor the
memory of the man who with his invention, revolutionized the farming
industry throughout the world.
The John
Lane Monument was designated a Will County Historic Landmark on September
21, 1995.
