The
Beecher Railroad Depot was an integral part of the Village of Beecher
community. The establishment of a depot often enhanced the community's
development, and Beecher was not an exception. Clear evidence of Beecher's
emergence as a prosperous railroad community is still exhibited in the
extant historic, commercial buildings in Beecher's downtown. Businesses such
as the livery stable, post office, general merchandise stores, and creamery
were established shortly after the establishment of the depot within close
proximity to the railroad.
Structurally,
the Beecher Railroad Depot is sound; however, the building exhibits years of
neglect. The intent of the Village of Beecher is to restore the building to
its original appearance. Notwithstanding the condition of the building, very
few of the railroad depots still function in their railway capacity.
According to several sources, this depot is the only remaining building of
its type existing in Will County. As a result, the rarity of the depot
building together with its style heightens the importance for its
preservation.
The
Beecher Railroad Depot was designated a Will County Landmark on June 21,
2001.
