Purpose:

The Zoning Enforcement Section is responsible for the investigation and enforcement of the provisions found in the Will County Zoning Ordinance.  If zoning action is needed, then administering the Zoning Ordinance is then the responsibility of the Current Planning & Zoning Section of the Development Review Division.

The specific responsibilities for the Zoning Enforcement Section include the following:

• Investigation of Zoning Violations. Zoning Enforcement staff investigates reports of zoning violations such as inoperable vehicles, junk and debris, non-conforming uses of property and compliance with conditions placed on special use permits.  Appropriate steps are taken, including possible legal action, to obtain compliance. 
• Regulation of signs  Through registration and inspection, proper maintenance or the removal of illegal or obsolete signs is part of this enforcement effort.

Other inspection and enforcement services are provided by the Code Enforcement Section of the Community Development Department.

Code Enforcement Policies

Will County respects the desire of all residents and business owners to enjoy their property.

1. The County will enforce its codes and ordinances based on the violation. 

2. The focus of the County's code enforcement is on the nuisance activity or structure.

3. The County seeks compliance first and foremost. 

4. Enforcement efforts are directed at providing opportunities for solving problems and eliminating violations.

5. When sufficient opportunity for eliminating the nuisance has been offered, but no significant results obtained, the County will aggressively pursue relief in the courts, including civil and criminal remedies.
